TV Shows of Yore

Is it just me, or does anyone else see the difference between Kids TV shows of today and the shows I grew up on in the Seventies and the Eighties. I see the shows my Nieces and Nephews are watching, like Icarly and Drake and Josh and I long for the Girls of Eastland. The Parents on today's batch of Kids shows seem mindless and ridiculous. It's really hard to find one good parent roll model on these shows. There seems to be no lesson learned, except how to outwit the adults. I introduced my 12 year old Niece to the old TV show the "Facts of Life" (through on demand cable) and she has watched every episode to date. She really liked the show and saw the difference for herself. I'm not saying shows like "Facts of Life", and "One Day at a Time" were jam packed with knowledge, but they were fun, respectful and a lot warmer than the kid shows of today. You would never think that Mrs Garrett or Ann Romano for that matter would ever be outsmarted by the Children they were in care of. In the end the Parents were there whether they could fix the problem or not and the Kids were glad to have them. I say these shows need some Ann Romano to keep them in line. What do you think?

  1. I agree. We went from Family Ties to Married With Children. The old shows were based around the family unit. Today you barely see the parents in a 30 minute sitcom. Its all about the kids and making their own decisions. Where's our Steven and Elise. Where's our Cliff and Clair. Where's our Mrs. Garrett. Our Tony and Angela. Heck, I'll even take Dan and Roseanne. But this total lack of respect for parents on sitcoms is horrible. Nowadays, your friend helps you with your biggest problem and they try hard not for the parents to find out about it. (and they don't) nine times out of ten. I miss Jo and Blair. Natalie and Tootie. Keith and Danny. Theo and Denise. Willis and Arnold. JJ, Thelma and Micheal. Alex, I Love U!

  2. When I was growing up there were so many shows parents could let their children watch without supervision (today that isn't the case). I was hooked on The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, The Walton’s, The Partridge Family, Eight is Enough, Family Ties and Growing Pains (just to name a few). However my old time favorite - even to this day - is Little House on the Prairie. That show made me want to be a Pioneer in the 1800's. Little House was the epitome of a family unit. I learned so many family values just from watching Little House. I can't say that today there aren't shows somewhat like that (7th Heaven comes to mind) but I have to agree that the majority of shows today lack the essence of shows from the past. I consider myself fortunate for growing up watching shows where “Family “had true meaning.

  3. You are so right Jrygrl. Little House was one of the best Shows. I still tape my favorite episodes to this day. I tried to get my Niece into that one but it was no go. It's too bad. It was a show that touched you, and left an impression. My favorite Episodes "I'll be waving as you drive away" When Mary went blind. The Fonz...ahhhh Still love him. By the way if you go to Hallmarkchannel.com they have a Little House Video Quiz it's pretty cool.
